Land and the People
New Zealand is a Parliamentary democracy, offering a safe political
environment for international students and visitors. It has a population
of only 3.5 million and is similar in size to the United Kingdom or Japan.
New Zealand is primarily a European culture which has absorbed many of
the rich and historic cultural elements from the Maori and Pacific Island
heritages, and now from its rapidly growing multi-cultural Asian communities.
New Zealanders have a reputation for friendliness, strength and independence.
With a well-educated population New Zealanders excel in many areas -
arts, science, technology and manufacturing. Schooling is compulsory until
the age of 16, but a steadily increasing number of students remain at
school to gain qualifications for further study at tertiary institutions.
Major Cities
The capital of New Zealand is Wellington (population approximately 400,000),
situated at the southern tip of the North Island. Other major cities and
towns are Auckland (population approximately 1,000,000), Christchurch
(population approximately 400,000). Popular tourist cities are Nelson
, Rotorua and Tauranga. Leading tourist resorts include Taupo, Queenstown
and Whitianga (Coromandel).
Climate
New Zealand's seasons are the reverse of those in the Northern Hemisphere.
The climate is temperate with mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers.
Summer: December - February
Autumn: March - May
Winter: June - August
Spring: September - November
New Zealand Currency
Most overseas currencies are accepted and easily exchanged in New Zealand
banks and exchange centres. To pay for tuition and other fees, international
students can send bank drafts through their local bank to New Zealand
banks, or directly to New Zealand institutions where they intend to study.
Overseas travellers cheques and credit cards such as Visa American Express,
Bankcard, Mastercard, Diners Club are accepted in many businesses, shops
and restaurants.

Living In New Zealand
Student Visa Procedure
You are advised to contact the nearest New Zealand Embassy or High Commission
to obtain up to date information on visa regulations.
With many countries, New Zealand has agreements that mean a student visa
is not normally required for one single course of study or training of
not more than three (3) calendar months' duration.
Standard Requirements:
Complete the 'Application for Student Visa' Form. These are available
at the New Zealand Embassy or High Commission and also from your local
education travel agents. With the 'Application for Student Visa' you will
need to include:
A recent passport-size photograph.
An 'Offer of Place' from a FIELS school which states that you have been
accepted by the school, the name of the course, the minimum time to complete
the course. This 'Offer of Place' will be sent to you by the FIELS school
who has confirmed your enrolment.
Evidence of payment of course tuition fee or evidence of exemption from
fee. Note: You are not required to produce evidence of payment of course
fees to have their applications approved in principle.
A written assurance from a FIELS school or other persons that suitable
accommodation is available to you in New Zealand. Most FIELS schools assist
with accommodation.
Evidence of sufficient funds to cover your living expenses and return
travel back to your home country.
If your application for a student visa is approved you will need a passport
which will be valid for 3 months after your planned date of departure
from New Zealand.
You will only be issued with a student visa if they have enrolled in a
course at a school accredited to offer it. The student visa is only valid
for one school.

what information you require. This will ensure a prompt and accurate reply
to your request. An online Enquiry Form is available on this site.
Costs of Study
Detailed costs can be obtained from the individual schools or from FIELS.
Health Care in New Zealand
Most FIELS schools require that you have total health care and travel
insurance cover, before arriving in NZ.
If you are studying in NZ for less than two years, you are responsible
for all health costs.
You can protect yourself from the cost of health care in NZ by having
insurance. When you take insurance, you pay a contribution. When you need
medical treatment, you can then claim the cost from your insurance provider.
It is also important to have travel insurance to safeguard against loss
of property. If you have travel insurance, you may claim for baggage loss,
travel delay, loss of deposits and other travel events.
FIELS in association with insurance companies offers insurance policies
to cover international students. A travel and medical insurance policy
has been designed by Uni-Care and other insurance companies. Please ask
for more details when enrolling at your school of choice.
